Kindergarten Szyszko Newsletter - October 8, 2010

We are playing a math sorting game with attribute blocks.
We are having a writing mini-lesson on how to "scribble write" in Kindergarten.

We are experiencing a story through "Shared Reading", in which the students participate in reading parts of the story with the teacher.

We are creating shape designs from Patten Block Cut-outs during Math Workshop.

We baked buns with jelly and sprinkles with Ms. Danusia!

We all stole a "cookie from the cookie jar", after learning this fun poem. They were delicious!

We are learning new vocabulary and beginning sounds with Ms. Danusia.

We are playing an alphabet game with Ms. Shemimi during Word Study.

We are playing a guessing game and identifying beginning sounds with Ms. Szyszko.

We are having fun playing with friends!

The boys are busy "creating" in the writing center during Choice Time.

We are busy, busy, busy in Mrs. Szyszko's Kindergarten class these chilly fall days! Our mornings our filled with lots of  drawing and writing- we are learning different ways that Kindergarteners can write, one of which is "scribble writing". So if your child comes to you with this kind of writing, ask them "What does this say?" and they will tell you! Praise, praise, praise their efforts and encourage risk taking with writing! This is an exciting, but risky time for them and they need you to be their cheerleader! That's all!
We have Reading Workshop everyday and we are building good reading habits, along with building the students' reading stamina. Many of the kids are already reading the class books that we make together and our Morning Message. Way to go , K Students! We will begin sending home small simple books with your child to read to you at night. It takes about 5 minutes and they like to read them several times to you. Try to read with your child in your native language every night as well, for at least 15 minutes.
We've started Unit 2 in Math and it is called "Counting and Measuring". You can help at home to reinforce what we are learning at school by giving your child every opportunity to count real life objects. Kids need lots of practice counting concrete objects to develop their number sense.
